Bad Sock

I declare these socks (well, this half-a-sock and its imaginary brother) defunct. I really like the way the colors look with the herringbone texture, but it just pulls in too much, and doesn't stretch sufficiently. So though the pattern calls for the same number of stitches on leg and foot, the foot is way fatter than the leg, producing a sock which would fit someone with skinnier legs than me, but much fatter feet. I'm not sure who such a person would be. (Yes, I could rejigger the pattern, but this is already my second attempt (the first one was way too small, so this is up one needle size). Oh well.

The herringbone rib is very cool-looking. And there are probably skinny guys with big feet who could wear the socks. Still, a non-stretchy sock top would be annoing ...

Herringbone rib for something that isn't a sock?

Yeah, I'm going to be thinking about where I can use that stitch that isn't a sock. Maybe baby sweaters. :)

A midget clown (with clown shoes under the socks, which I know is non-traditional, but so are lots of things about the whole midget clown wearing imaginary herringbone socks thing)?

Or possibly a wallaby with lymphedema, or an alpaca with bunions, or a patriofelis.

Or Oedipus.

Did you invent the pattern yourself?

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who runs into problems like this -- the cotton yarns seem to be less stretchy than wool, making many of my socks a little too small in the ankle.

It's from "Knitting Socks with Handpainted Yarn". The pattern lies, and claims "the bold ribs add stretch for a more forgiving fit.", which is totally not true. (Well, the ribbing adds more stretch than the herringbone, but it's still not a lot.

Apparently (now that I look more on Ravelry) the pattern was originally designed to use a larger needle for the leg than the foot, but that got dropped.

Oh, that would look lovely! :) I'm all about knitting baby sweaters (for friends! not me!) these days.

I hate it when socks don't work out though.
