Yes (assuming single crochet rather than slip stitch), though if the pattern can be arranged to have an continuous row along the edge of each colored section, that might be enough to disguise the steps. Or it may be possible to adapt differently for crochet and use stitches of varying heights (but that's harder pattern translation problem).
