I liked the magic concept. The first book was on the Nebula short-list, so that says something. And it was definitely readable, but I don't think I ever read the sequels. Also... I remember that the treatment of slavery seemed too blase (and I read it a couple years ago, so it might read even worse now). I think maybe 3.5 stars?
