I went to see the Village all by myself. I don't think I've seen a movie by myself in... well, I'm sure I must have, at some point.... hmm. No, can't think of one. It might happen again, though, what with the Somerville Theater being forty-five seconds away.

Of course, because it's an M Night Shyamalan movie, I can't really talk about it in detail. I've seen commentary complaining that it's boring and slow, but I didn't mind the pacing. He's very good at making me jump - Signs made me scared of the dark for weeks - and this movie was no exception. Some clever twists. But... there are some bits I really wanted to argue with. I wanted to argue with Signs some, too (these aliens were technologically competent enough to invent space travel?), but more with the Village.

Still, it's not really about the logical coherence of the plot, it's about the crafting of the mood. And that was well done; the strings he chooses to pull just work very well on me.

(Hey! That was the guy from the Pianist? I would never have guessed.)

I need to remember that the previews of Shyamalan's movies are rotated through i of the movie, and that while I would rarely enjoy the movie that the preview makes me think the movie is, I often enjoy the movie.

I liked The Village, but I found it anticlimactic. I didn't find it to be boring or slow. I managed to guess part of the end, somehow, which I think detracted. I think Unbreakable is still my favorite of these.

I also thought that the character who eventually turned out to be the protagonist was pretty cool.

Yeah, it's an unfortunatec choice for the marketing guys. You either give away the secrets in the advertisements, or you risk getting the wrong audience. A group sitting behind us stormed out halfway through at the showing I was at. They were expecting some sort of slasher flick and were very disappointed.

Alas, a costume-skit at worldcon messed up a bit of the movie for me. They did a recognizable job of the yellow robes and a monster (which was also a reasonable job, but I didn't know that yet), and then revealed one of the secrets of the movie, while saying "huh, that was what it was about, that's lame." I give them 3 out of 5 whaps to the side of the head.

I did enjoy the movie still. It didn't make me jump out of my seat ever, so I think my twitch zones are different from yours. Well, hardly ever.
