Back to the sweater mines

I started this pair of socks on Christmas, after finishing up the last of the actual gift projects. [livejournal.com profile] ilhander was very impressed to note that I was close to done at yesterday's football-watching, a day after casting the second sock on the previous evening. I am swift and zippy! The interesting thing about this pair is the diagonal shaping, which you can probably just make out if you look hard at the non-thumbnail size. Knitting stretches along the vertical and horizontal, and not so much along the diagonal (this is the opposite of woven fabric, which is why a straight translation of one type of clothing to the other will often not work as well as the translator would like); this pattern turns the bottom of the instep diagonal, so it's less stretchy and more arch-supporty. Of course, this means the top of the sock stretches more to make up for it, so I'm not sure how much of a difference it actually makes. I'll have to wear them to check. :)

Alas, I am far, far from caught up and will probably be knitting Christmas socks for another month or two. My poor sweater...
