More about Octopodes

All the octopodes (well, except for the bonus two that [livejournal.com profile] tirinian commissioned) are either delivered or on their way (unless someone else wants to play!), and the Royal Artifacts are finally done.

On the other side of things, I'm starting to get the hang of mysql and PHP. It's a lot of fun getting to obsess about learning something new, with a project to play with, though it leaves me a little distracted during things like conversations. Thinking like a database seems less of an effort than first thinking like an object was. The funniest bug of the evening: "Don't put a <br> in your SQL query." My usual debugging technique of "print statements everywhere!" is totally unable to help with this.

Are the rules published anywhere in a concatenated format?

[identity profile] firstfrost.livejournal.com 2008-04-15 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Concatenated? No. If the dialogue is too confusing, this (http://web.mit.edu/boojum/www/Octopus/Rules/becoming-king.htm) is sort of the center of the summary.

("There will be contests of various sorts. Send in pictures or other things in order to compete in the contests.")

*nod* I found that. Thanks for providing the link and for helping.

I'm still confused on how and when. It's so frustrating that I basically don't want to play, because the rules are getting in the way. :(

Well, there's been email to the people who are playing, giving them more time information, with things like "the contests will start appearing in about a week, and you'll get email then", if that's what you mean.

Since I think you understand SF0 better than I do, does "It's like SF0 with groupings of tasks, except there are no level requirements for any of the tasks, and all the entrants for a current task are given a score" help?

I'm also starting to construct a frequently asked questions (http://web.mit.edu/boojum/www/Octopus/Rules/questions.htm) page, addressing things that people have asked.

(For example, the rules didn't mention any deadlines. That's because there aren't any. But some people assumed there were, and then got confused because they couldn't find anything telling them what the deadlines were.)

(Edited several times to fix the link. Bah!)

(replying in aggregate)

Ah, no deadline. That helps a lot. Now the whole "shuttle the Artifact around" thing makes a lot more sense.

Urr, except you're not calling the Crown and the Pen and the Multiphase Quadlaser "Artifacts", so I will plead tiredness for not looking up the correct term in previous posts. :)

I'm pretty sure we're calling them Artifacts. Well, Royal Artifacts, but close enough...

Is it too late? Can I play?

[identity profile] firstfrost.livejournal.com 2008-04-15 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not too late! Your octopus is, in fact, already on its way to you! :)

[identity profile] firstfrost.livejournal.com 2008-04-15 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
You should email me your current email address, though, 'cause I suspect you may not be getting my mail.

[identity profile] treiza.livejournal.com 2008-04-16 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
hurray! yeah, I haven't gotten any mail from you.
