1) Hey, Two Men of Florence is not the same as Two Gentlemen of Verona!

2) I have never heard so many cell phones ring in a theater production in my life! Were all these people raised in barns, from which they could only communicate with other barns by cell phone?

I wonder how long it'll be before pocket-sized cellphone jammers become available.

I realize this is probably like ranting about that horrible new social phenomenon, kids parking. Ah well. :)

There are pocket cellphone jammers (though I guess the pocket ones aren't powerful enough to blanket an entire theater yet). Apparently other countries have varying policies about cell phone jammers in theaters, but in the US they're illegal to buy, sell, advertise, use, make, etc.

Yeah. I sorta want a car-powered one (one that blankets a radius around my car for a few car lengths, which conveniently ignores the fact that a lot of people would look puzzedly at their now-inoperative cellphone as they came near me -- i.e., become more distracted) and a pocket one.

Really, what you need are spray-on faraday cages. Clusters, libraries, theatres... just spray the inside walls with some very cheap substance that tech tech tech and bang, cellphones don't work. :)

The most amusing (and disturbing) cell phone situation I had in a theater went like this...

In a movie theather, a woman's cell phone rings. Instead of turning it off, she answers it, only to say, "I'm in a movie theather, I can't talk now." And then goes on to have a conversation about the fact that she can't talk, repeating that phrase about four times before the person on the other end agrees it's ok to not talk.

Just hang up. :)

Hi firstfrost! Temple Gill here, the Huntington Theatre Company's Director of Marketing. You're right - we had a record number of cell phones ring on Sunday night, so much so that the director of the show re-wrote the pre-show announcement himself to more sternly ask folks to turn off their phones (we'll see if it works!).
