Normally, as a rather absent-minded person, my method for finding things is to look in the few likely places that I might have put whatever it is, and it's in one of them. (There are more than few places in the house, but a particular thing will generally not try to hang out in all of them). This was failing badly for my folder of crochet hooks - not on the piano, not with the backup yarn, not in a knitting bag, not in the undertable - and searching all the places multiple times wasn't helping.

However, I have successfully tracked it down! The last time I crochet anything was for the Cambridge Science Festival's knitting/math demonstration - could I have brought the crochet hooks to that? Yes! There they were, in the half-empty paper bag of disposable circulars that I brought to let people take away. Hooray!

For those of you who have properly working memories for the little things, this probably does not sound so impressive. But I have been stomping around the living room in a victory stomp, proclaiming that I have found my tools @mahk-voice(WITH THE POWER OF MY MIND).

Is a "disposable circular" a knitting needle or a pamphlet? I'd be interested in the latter. (Or in the former, but really, I can buy my own knitting needles.)

Knitting needles. They hadn't meant to be disposable when I bought them, but they were dirt cheap - a set like this (http://cgi.ebay.com/MeiMei-15pairs-47-Circular-BambooNeedles-US0-US15-/170342042853?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item27a92d4ce5). The joins aren't great, so too much use (and I seem to be tough on circular joins) causes the needle to come off of the connector.

So when I brought them to the knitting demo, I figured, well, hopefully they'll last for an hour, and people can take them with them when they go, because nobody is going to *finish* their scarf that fast, and since they were cheap, I won't mind losing them.

Neat! I'm glad I didn't follow my first impulse and ask for a copy.

I'm contemplating one of those sets with the interchangable cables and needles, but that might be awful.

I have a Boye set from a long-ago Christmas present. They're not bad; there's a tendency for the screw join to slowly unscrew itself as you work, but you can keep tightening them up, so the tips never come *off*, but sometimes the yarn will get caught in the gap. I also seem to have lost the longer cables, which is annoying - the reason I bought the cheap needles was to get really long cables, which I am otherwise mostly lacking. If I were buying an interchangeable set now, I might try the Knitpicks ones instead, but that's because I've grown pretty fond of their circulars for sock needles.
