I actually wrote most of this two weeks or so ago, but failed to quite finish. It seems a shame to not mention things that make me happy, even if all the "today"s are wrong now.

I've mentioned the Rolly Place (Middlesex) before, where [livejournal.com profile] mjperson and I eat most of our lunches. It's nice to have a place to be a regular, to know the names of the waitstaff and have them know yours. A few years ago, we heard that two of the waitresses had been talking to each other Easter Weekend and remarked "Oh, Mike will be able to eat meat again next week!". Mike gave her Magic cards for her burlesque outfit, too. It's a very anecdote-dense lunch relationship.

When not eating lunch with Mike (for example, today) I often go to Fresco, which has the best fish and chips. They take a piece of fish out of the fridge, dredge it in breading, and put it in the fryer. I realize this doesn't sound that novel, but it's not the standard for quasi-fast-food city fish and chips places, in that it doesn't involve pre-battered frozen things. Anyway, I came in, and the woman who is normally the cashier was making a sandwich for the person at the front of the line. The woman at the back of the kitchen caught my eye and made a gesture at the fryer as if to say "Are you having the fish and chips (like you usually do)?" and I nodded, and she made me fish and chips. We don't know each other's names, or even say anything to each other, but it's still a connection. I really like that sort of thing.

And, I was about half an hour leaving work today because I got distracted with some of the rest of the helpdesk to try to figure out what metal a coat hanger was made of (No, I don't know why there was a coat hanger wandering around the call center. It was made of thicker wire than the usual cheap wire hanger, but was very light.) Aluminum was the obvious candidate, but we wanted to be able to prove it. Sadly, we didn't have the right tools for water displacement, and we were too scared to use Oliver's oxyacetylene torch to try to melt it, so I had to resort to estimation (trying to measure the length with string, and the diameter with a measuring tape). Sadly, my estimate came up closer to titanium than aluminum, which seemed a little implausible. In any event, it was an amusingly eccentric diversion.

Difficulty coming to lunch is one of the more annoying things about my stomach issues. :(
