Knitting Projects Up for Grabs

I'm getting close to done with everything in my "for real" knitting queue, including one Secret Project. Does anyone want anything? I make no claims on speed, I think it took me two years to get to doing the squid hat for [livejournal.com profile] kelkyag,, but if it's something for someone's kid, I will certainly attempt to make it sized for the kid at the time it's done rather than the time it's requested. :)

Susan loves getting things from people, and she wears them all the time. If you want to make her a hat or a 4T-sized sweater she will happily wear them this fall/winter.

At the moment purple is her favorite color.

If you run across a toe-up sock pattern that would work well in cotton (or other non-stretchy yarn), please let me know.

I want a doily for my dresser, but none of the patterns I've seen are quite right. I may end up tatting one.

I am always happy to absorb cool semi-impractical sock art, if you are looking for an excuse to make some. But that's not quite the thing you asked. :)

Someday I would love another Observatory Sweater, if you are up for a project of that magnitude. The one I've got is a great boon for working at home while keeping the thermostat fairly low, but it does get dirty now and then. :)

I am not in a position to ask for anything, but I do love when you put up pictures of your projects, so I will hope for those. :)

I do have a kit for this sock (http://www.tsocktsarina.com/sockkits/cleopatra.html) that I need an excuse to make, so that can definitely go on the queue.

Another observatory sweater would be fun, and will make [livejournal.com profile] mjperson glower at it, which is also amusing. Cables are traditional for Observatory Sweaters, but you aren't required to follow the convention if you don't want to. :)

I seem to have a tradition that people I don't know are allowed to trade cookies for small projects (socks, hats, scarves), if you'd like! :) But I'll also keep posting pictures.

Hee!

I find I don't have strong opinions about things like cables -- that is, textured patterns like that are cool and differentiate one sweater from another, but are not something I have much forward imagination about. (So, if there's a pattern it would amuse you to make, I'll probably like it.) I tend to focus more on color (mostly, my opinion there is: jewel tones!).

Thanks! :)

Hmm. Non-stretchy cotton for socks seems like it would be really prone to sagging. I can find some toe-up socks designed for Fixation, but that's certainly stretchy. Do you have a cotton sock yarn you like?

I always like things like this (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/frosted-ferns-7633) for doilies, but I'm not sure about the whole "nothing is right" part. :)

Oooh, the frosted ferns pattern is really pretty. I like the asymmetry in the leaf motifs -- I'll have to keep that in mind when pondering patterns. (The different blocking choices visible in the pictures are nifty, too.)

I would happily squeee for socks, but having just gotten the giant squid of giant giantness, oh dear my goodness, I think I go to the very end of the line and then a bit further back. :)

Perhaps what I want is a runner.

You have a lovely book with many runner patterns in it, but they are not the runners I want. I've looked at a lot of tatted runners and they weren't the ones I wanted either. Nor were any of the runners I saw in Google images...

[identity profile] mathhobbit.livejournal.com 2012-07-25 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, right, and socks! My favorite pattern for cotton socks is the Sodera sock pattern. It has a lot of yarn overs and knit through back of loops which seem to make it work. I used "On Your Toes Bamboo" for those.

My leafy lacy socks use plain old Knit Picks cotton and seem to work fine. They're short, so they can't slide down very far.

what's an observatory sweater?

[identity profile] firstfrost.livejournal.com 2012-07-25 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I will put "socks for mikka" at the back of the queue, then. :)

[identity profile] firstfrost.livejournal.com 2012-07-25 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I make sweaters for [livejournal.com profile] mjperson to wear at the observatory, since "in winter when the roof is open" requires warm clothes. One of the ones I made for him turned out too small, so [livejournal.com profile] desireearmfeldt yoinked it.

Sweaters! But I know they're time-consuming. :-)

Some things with cables, if any of them particularly catch your eye:

Classic:

You always seem like the right recipient for something like one of the Norwegian sweaters:

[identity profile] fredrickegerman.livejournal.com 2012-07-25 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, nice. Though I probably don't need the chest-emphasizing patterning on that first one. :-)

Here are some others in the same approximate style:

Ah, I get it! I am gradually morphing into an observer myself, so I definitely see the utility of an observatory sweater.

Oo! Pretty pictures!

[personal profile] desireearmfeldt 2012-07-25 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
See, this is totally why I'm a sweater-boor: all the "classic" ones look equivalent to me. I mean, I can look at them side by side and describe what's different about them, but they all just read as "nice cable sweater" to my eye. :) (I thought, without checking, that "on break" might be the same pattern as my current Observatory Sweater, but no, no popcorn bobbles.) Any of those would be nice, but to choose among them I'd mostly have to throw darts.

The kimono one is very pretty but not ideal for a sweater whose purpose is to be As Warm As Possible. Ditto the Archer.

The ones with the floppy necks are less my sort of thing.

Reallon looks pretty but I can't quite tell from the pictures what the whole thing looks like (what happens at the waist/stomach? (And how empire-waisted is it, really? Hard to tell.)

Gwendolyn is kind of cool -- I have a strange fascination with hoods, though I can't quite decide whether a wooly sweater with a hood is Cool or Weird. :) It might be just the thing for tooling in a cold house, though it might be less practical for wearing out in public (or under an outdoor coat). Hm...

Aw, you don't want to parade your manly physique? :>

Re: Oo! Pretty pictures!

[identity profile] firstfrost.livejournal.com 2012-07-25 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, okay, the classic ones are pretty similar, especially since I was looking for "wide central cable" to counter the "little central cables" for the grey sweater. :)

Hmm, maybe I will go with Inishmaan, since I have that pattern, and because it has popcorns in it (which I think are silly but now popcorns are the Andrea Sweater Thing) and because if I make Norway for Jan then they will be from the same book!

(Unless you decide that hoods are the way to go after all)

I feel guilty commenting since I knit too, but Duncan always wants more sweaters than I have time to knit him. He loves the jedi sweater you made him.
