This is another Christmas present request, an extra-bonus-warm alpaca hatscarf, to allow Jess to brave the terrible and icy winters of Sebastopol. And a matching octopus.

Alpaca yarn is really warm, though having two attached scarves to wrap around your head doesn't hurt. :)

Hmm. Does this look like a chef hat, or does it look like a big white screw in the octopus's head? I am wavering.

Scarves like tentacles! Yes, I can see how one might need extra warmth in Sebastopol. I mean it's in the north, right? Practically Siberia.

It sounds like there is a picture in this question and there is a lot of empty space where a pic could go but I don't see one...

Whoops, I seem to have stuck it in with https instead of http, so it only looks right to people who have already authenticated to web.mit.edu with certificates. So it looked okay to me, but I see how it's invisible to most people. :)

Wow, did you just make that since I asked you about it?

I'm on the fence too. It's still cute though. :-)

I made the hat after you asked, but the octopus is the same one as matches the hatscarf at the beginning. :)

Hee! Ok, that's a lot faster. :-)

I guess I expect a chef's hat to be poofier on top, but too much poof might make it look like a mushroom. The other thing that makes it somewhat screw-like is it's diameter. Given the resolution you get with yarn and knitting (ie, that you couldn't see the individual poofs in the top puffy part), it might be easier to convey the chef hat concept with a bigger overall diameter.

But really, as-is is plenty cute and there's no need to go overboard unless you want to.

I think the trouble is that my image of a chef's hat is based on the Swedish Chef, who has a particularly pancakey hat top. :)
