Thrummed Mittens

These are Christmas presents, done in reasonably sufficient time. For cold Minnesota winters. Actually, a lot of my Christmas presents for my mother-in-law have been winter knitting. I am apparently still a little traumatized.

Anyway, thrums (twists of unspun wool caught in the knitting at regular intervals, to stuff the mittens with soft warm insulation) were interesting to work with, though the instructions for these particular mittens left quite a lot to be desired, especially given that one bit was "make thrum about the size of the sample" and the kit had no sample. There were two different ways to twist the wool in, one way that made larger bumps and one way that made smaller bumps. The purple mittens demonstrate the larger bumps - they kind of make me think of Daleks. Sadly, I think they may become ratty very quickly once they start being worn. But that shouldn't stop them from being warm.

Are the larger pictures better because you don't have to click through? Or more annoying because they take up screen real estate?

Larger pictures are good, smaller pictures are good, posting anything is good! I do not dislike clicking through. I like that you post! You should post more! :-)

Wow, the inside of those gloves are massively thickly fuzzy. I agree, it seems like that would get ratty, but it sure looks neat when new. And if it's warm, who cares what the insides look like anyhow? (Said the guy who stuck his friend in an eviscerated tauntaun. :-)

Also, which thing has you traumatized? The coldness of the winters there, or the fact that your MIL said you knit her a lot of stuff, or that you do your Christmas knitting on a deadline, or what?

It was the coldness of the winter my first Christmas visit there that traumatized me - we went to hang the lights on the house at something like 10 below zero, which I was not quite ready for. Other visits have not been quite as cold as that.

I am also a little worried that the outside bumps will get ratty, but oh well. :)

These pictures are a reasonable size on my screen -- but if I want bigger I have to click through twice (to the project page and then to the photo).

Mmm, warm and fuzzy. Will the thrums felt over time?
