Moved...

Well, there were some problems with a red car in the way, and with the estimate being quite low (when I said "twelve bookcases", did they not think to include "books for twelve bookcases"?), and a torrential monsoon, and twinknj not having space cleared, and the movers looking exhausted, and the sofas not fittin up the stairs to the third floor, and [livejournal.com profile] tirinian and I abandoning [livejournal.com profile] harrock for work and then dinner...

...but we're moved. Whew.

The moment of epiphany for me, far more so than the stuff vanishing, was when I was talking about going back to clean, and tirinian said he had left the door unlocked.

Now, tirinian always locks the door. He has an area effect lock-the-door field, always on. I can go downstairs for two minutes, leaving him sitting at the computer, and come back up the stairs to find that the door has locked, despite his never having moved.

I took stun damage. He raised his eyebrows and said "I don't live there."

Oh for reference next time, you can call Somerville DPW (I think that is the office) and get them to reserve a parking space starting the day before the move. VERY handy. We tried that when we moved, but we were foiled by the snow emergency. I guess they were all out plowing. So we didn't have the space we wanted AND had to dig out another. Thanks to some helpful digging and negotiating on the part of my father-in-law we DID get the spot we needed.

You must have had lame movers. Or at least not very gung ho. To be discouraged by the lack of a parking space. And why weren't they offering to take your sofas in through a window? Trust me I have had the movers suggest that at one point! maybe next time you need Deathwish Piano Movers? (http://www.deathwishpiano.com/)

Deathwish is great! Like anyone who's really good at something, they gave me the impression that moving pianos isn't all that hard. Silly me. It took them about ten minutes to move the piano in the first time; these movers probably took an hour on it.

Our most recent intelligence from chenoameg had been that Somerville didn't reserve parking spaces for moving any more - we just put chairs out, but we underestimated the size of the truck. :)

(I think taking the sofa through a window would have involved installing a crane in the back yard; that would probably have been beyond the call of duty).
