[livejournal.com profile] harrock reminds me that next May will be our second anniversary, not our first. It took me a minute or two to believe him. Now, if I tracked back when various things happened (getting married and buying a house being the two milestones I can theoretically keep track of), he's clearly right. But really, if someone leaped out of a closet and demanded to know when he and I started going out, I'd react with "four years ago!" But it was four years ago four years ago, so I'm not sure why I got stuck there.

This is why I am in constant amazement at [livejournal.com profile] justom's ability to remember when things happened (though he's really a couple sigma better than average, and I seem to be a couple sigma worse). Including the important milestones in my life that seem to float around for me like, um, floating milestones is a visual image that is now rather compelling. These huge grey menhirs of significance, bobbing like balloons haphazardly above the road of life, failing to stay put. They happened, I remember that much. But when, and how long ago? "Four years".

I barely remember what happened at all, ever. It's one of the reasons I started logging my games - people would tell me about games I ran that on reflection I clearly did run, but had no recollection of. Games that ran for months.

That's fascinating! It doesn't happen to me, at all. I construct elaborate architechtures in my head in which to slot in all the events in my life. I was just reminiscing last night with [livejournal.com profile] fennel about our first date, and our first coffee, and he was amazed that I had it all in the right order, since he could barely remember.

*shrug*

I was with you, until I realized that I wasn't in Boston last May for your wedding. It was my 10th reunion.

I thought it was the girl who was supposed always be scolding the guy for not remembering the anniversary. I guess as long as you're solid on the date, you can still scold :)

SIL just attended a bat mitzva (sp?) for a girl she used to babysit. I remember meeting the child (way back when.) That was quite the shocker.

Four years ago four years ago sounds about right. I was in California when I got your letter. ;) Congratulations!

I have to put a lot of conscious effort into remembering when things happened. I go out of my way to recall

(I got married the year before I bought a house, too. And I would have no idea what year I got married if [livejournal.com profile] baronethadn't given out those handy mugs later that summer.

I have to think a minute before I can remember how old I am. For some reason, I get stuck for years at a certain age. I was mentally 18 for a good 5 years. Now I've just given up and recalculate it every time I'm asked.

Recalculate

Yeah, I too just seem to recalculate it every time I'm asked. Some one says "How old are you?" and I think "What year is this?"

Yes, [livejournal.com profile] justom was always good at remembering events. I can never remember. He has extra points in restaurants too. We'd be in a restaurant and have conversations like,
"Wow, this place is neat!"
"We've been here before, you know."
"Really? I don't remember that at all. What did I get?"
"The duck."
"Duck, I love duck! I'll get that! Wait, did I like it?"
"Not so much, you thought the sauce was too peppery."
"Oh. I'll get the salmon then."

That sounds like me. I have no time sense. I usually know that something happened; sometimes I can put multiple events in the correct order. Figuring out how far apart they were I find really tricky.

I usually track things by events of well-known or easily-computed dates, like Assassin games and shows. That fails during periods when I'm not doing either of those things, of course.

Hang on a second...
