(this one has been fun both to read and try to invent, which is rare for memes)

I have:

  1. knitted a cobweb lace tablecloth
  2. debugged the LaTeX error message "gobble gobble gobble"
  3. bought a wedding dress over the web, without seeing or trying on.
  4. forged a Key to Hell (two, actually)
  5. been an officer of a student activity for twice as long as I was a student.
  6. asked a police officer to show me a *second* form of identification because the first wasn't good enough.
  7. played the cello solo in a performance, without a cello
  8. invented a word now in the Urban Dictionary (well, okay, anyone can put words there, but I didn't put mine in).
  9. accidentally set the carpet on fire
  10. been hospitalized with a Mysterious and Unidentifiable Disease for two weeks. (identified after that point)

Aha! I also did #3. I gave instructions for a general style, and trusted the dressmaker to choose material and correctly construct the garment.

What does "carpet on fire" mean? Do I need actual flames, or will smoky and melting do?

[livejournal.com profile] rifmeister remembers also having worked on #4. I admit that's not what I remember, but I can't really claim to remember anything ten years ago very clearly, so I give him back credit. :)

Streptobacillus moniliformis (which I could pronounce at a ridiculously young age!) or "ratbite fever". My mom sent me this a little while back - apparently it's still Rare and Mysterious.

There was enough flame to push me into Utter Panic, but admittedly, it was mostly smoky and melting. And small enough that it could be stomped out.

Rat bite fever

OK, I have to ask, how did you get it?
The article claims you get it from handling or getting bit by rats.
And seeing as you got it when you were little, I didn't think you were working with the rats in a laboratory.

I had pet rats. (They're actually really nice - friendly and smart and affectionate. Later, I had hamsters, which are softer to pet but dumb as rocks and harder to convince to be friendly). I'm pretty sure I was never bitten.

I've got #3 as well. I'd not seen it at all, my mom ordered it for me.

I'd love to hear the story behind #6 and the word for #7.

The word was "taffer", from Thief. (There's a [livejournal.com profile] taffer, which amuses me too).

One of the things I do at work is reset people's passwords when they forget them. In order to do this, they have to come in and show me some ID. (It always amuses me to no end to get to ask a CP "Can I see some identification, sir?"). Now, one CP who had to change his password showed me a police ID, which had his picture, and said he was an MIT policeman - but it didn't have his name on it! So that was really no help for proof of ID, as opposed to proof of policeness. (Other police IDs I've seen have had names, so I'm still baffled by what was up with that particular ID.)

This is kind of cool.

I'd do one, but mine would be all military stuff and it would be too easy.

I'm not sure I can think of more than about 3 things for me.
