Celebrations, large and small

Whee. Back from California. The beginning half was a little slow, but we got to wander around Mountain View and see people who we don't see often enough. (I've promised to invite [livejournal.com profile] ricedog if there's another RPG wedding, since he comes to visit for weddings...). Mountain View is definitely the home of Bubble Tea. I bought a bunch of books in a local bookstore (nice place - they had lots of employee recommendations, and a good combination of trade and mass market paperbacks), and may or may not have imagined a funny look when I paid for them with an Amazon credit card - but I refuse to feel guilt about buying from Amazon, because I pay my dues in real book stores too.

[livejournal.com profile] countertorque's wedding was lovely, and definitely more fun than the last Catholic wedding I remember (I realize that I'm not supposed to find "Your love for each other is but a pale shadow of God's love for you" disturbing). I don't really have the taking-pictures-of-everything down yet, but I got a few nice ones.

Then, to Davis for niece Amelia's first birthday. She's still adorable, though not quite as cheery as usual due to recovering from pneumonia (sniff!). Like my little brother over a quarter-century before her, she uses "Da!" as the Universal Word which appears to mean "What's this?". After much badgering at Christmas time to try and convince her to crawl, she's finally got a scootching-forward crawl which involves sitting down and using one leg to lever forward. She clearly doesn't like to not get to look around, and this weird crawl lets her keep her head up. She's pretty close to walking, too, and then she'll be unstoppable. On the other hand, the hell hound lurking near by in this picture is a little disturbing:

Oh yeah! I like your camera! Much easier to depress the buttons than [livejournal.com profile] twe's. Although I suppose first I should ask how many of my pictures you had to toss out to get the ones that worked! (I whipped around so fast to catch the kiss that I thought I must have gotten a blur instead.)

And I really like the table shot! Okay, now I've got to go look at the other album you provided.

(And sorry for the bubble spots. They're probably my fault since I was nearby and blowing lots of bubbles.)

I'm sure you can't take the blame for all of the bubbles in the air, given that everyone had bubbles. ("It's 1183 and we're barbarians! We all have bubbles!")

I think I threw out one of the photos you took, but that was later when I was trying to make space to take a few more pictures (I keep failing to buy another memory card). It didn't not come out, it was just similar to the other pictures of people-reciting-Mawwidge. :)

Camera buttons

My old one or the one I had at the wedding? I remember my old one being finicky sometimes (mostly because it was slow to focus in some situations, I think), but haven't had any trouble with the new one that I've noticed.

Somewhere at Nikon, the engineer who worked for three years to improve the CCD resolution is crying.

"We spend hundreds of millions of dollars giving our 8 megapixel SLR camera a rangefinder, and they compare cameras based on how easy it is to push the button!!!" (sob)

Well, different benefits for different people. I didn't buy an 8 megapixel camera because I end up putting all my pictures in on-line photo albums, and not printing them on good paper at high dpi. So I didn't need that powerup. Instead, I got something with a couple of lens-camera-like features (zoom, handfeel), and whatever they call the "stabilize against your hands moving" feature, because that's what appealed to me. But Canon makes something like sixteen thousand different digital cameras with different features, so they can market to all sorts of people. It's capitalism in action. You should approve. :)

Oh, I do approve. It's the engineer who is confused.

Possibly, though they're more likely to be at Canon, since that's what we both have.

The real points in favor of [livejournal.com profile] firstfrost's camera is the 10x optical zoom & some of the extra manual options.

The points in favor of mine are that it's the same size as your wallet. :)

Hee! :)
