The Investigators with Not Enough To Do announce their findings: the UI of the front page of Amazon that you see depends on the browser and operating system that you use! Only the select few browser-enabled get to see their Gold Box!

The crack white-magic team reports:

New style

• IE
• Safari OS X 10.4
• Firefox 1.0.2 on Athena/Sun
• With Opera 7.54 on Linux, regardless of whether Opera is identifying as MSIE6.0, Mozilla, or Opera.

Old

• Netscape
• Safari OS X 10.3
• Konqueror
• Firefox 1.0.2 for Win2K

I did say we had not enough to do, right?

Edit: crs reports below (and the Investigators have confirmed) that it's actually a cookie issue. Probably if you have cookies dating back to the old UI, you keep seeing the old UI. But if you clear your amazon cookies, or use a new web browser, then you see the new UI.

I just had the old format showing in IE, then cleared cookies, and got the new one page.
