So did someone else's mail get forwarded to you by mistake? Every once in a while I get some other MIT alum's mail, because a friend of theirs assumes that they're the only person who ever had the initials aa. It's never been anything embarrassing, though.

No, it's that I set up forwarding for other people. Twice today I've sent mail saying "I'm forwarding email from X to Y" and it's bounced from the Y address.

Some years ago, my MIT residence's "all-residents-and-alums" list was one silent letter off from a girl who occasionally almost got some very... interesting... email.
