Saturday a bunch of us saw a Harvard production of Proof at the
Loeb Ex (which stands for Experimental, which means it's where the
normal shows are). I found three of the four actors to mesh well
together; the fourth seemed a little different (more oratational, less
natural? I didn't think he he was worse, just different...), but then
it turned out he was mostly imaginary and crazy to boot, so it stopped
bothering me. I liked the arguments; they felt real. The math didn't
feel real at all, mostly because the script avoided using any with a
ten foot pole. ("This could mean actual *advances* in the field of
SCIENCE" -
justom quoting from Lost Skeleton of
Cadavra). The Harvard productions at the Ex seem to try very hard to fit everyone in, which means an extra ten minutes at the beginning while they drag in more chairs. I always find that a little surprising, just because nobody else does that. But I suppose it's nice of them. :)
Sunday was Amerika at the Loeb Mainstage (which means it's where the crazy experimental shows are because that's what the ART does). In this case, it was a little bit of very nice singing surrounded by two and a half hours of Kafka-flavored "what the hell?" The lying/wriggling on the floor streak is still unbroken. The actors were good, but I still don't have anything sensible to say about the play.
