Actually I thought the world was split into people who strongly preferred overhand and those who didn't notice/care about such things. The idea that some people find underhand superior is deeply disturbing to me.

It is easier in my second floor bathroom for me to get toilet paper off a very full roll by pushing than by pulling, so there I apparently defaulted to underhand.

A has a Very Strong Preference for overhand, so I try to do it her way when I remember.

Yeah, see, now I want a finer-grained poll.

* Overhand rules! Death to underhand!
* Strong preference for overhand.
* Mild preference for overhand.
* Random and/or couldn't care less.
* There's a difference?
* Mild preference for underhand.
* Strong preference for underhand.
* Underhand rules! Death to overhand!

Ah, see, I didn't actually wonder which one people preferred (which is the poll I usually see), I only wondered how many people actually cared. :) Though it is now clear that I should have had options for "strong preference" versus "mild preference".

These are the internets, there are no mild perferences.

I prefer underhand, although I'm not entirely sure why. But I don't feel that strongly about it, either.

I knew someone who had to do underhand because the cats could unroll the paper if it was overhand.

My response (not listed in poll) is "I have a preference, but practical reasons may cause other people to use the other direction and that's fine too."

(In particular: I use overhand, but expect dog/cat owners to need to use underhand more often.)

That seems like one lame cat if it can't cause trouble with toilet paper over under or still in the plastic wrapper.

Certainly Smiles can get into less trouble if the roll is underhand.
