I prefer a particular rotational orientation but don't care that much.

This! I consider overhand right and proper, and there have been times in my life when I would actually switch rolls that I encountered in the underhand position. But I have since made it a personal rule that whoever changes the roll gets to decide (and it doesn't make them a terrible person).

But I still picked the first answer, because my instincts are nearly that strong.

+1, except for not actually voting.

I didn't used to care. Then people kept arguing about it and I started to pay attention, and developed a strong preference. Although I think others are not terrible people.

Agreed. I was told one day that there was a "right" way, and after some instruction I came to agree! But I wouldn't fight about it.

Actually I thought the world was split into people who strongly preferred overhand and those who didn't notice/care about such things. The idea that some people find underhand superior is deeply disturbing to me.

It is easier in my second floor bathroom for me to get toilet paper off a very full roll by pushing than by pulling, so there I apparently defaulted to underhand.

A has a Very Strong Preference for overhand, so I try to do it her way when I remember.

Yeah, see, now I want a finer-grained poll.

* Overhand rules! Death to underhand!
* Strong preference for overhand.
* Mild preference for overhand.
* Random and/or couldn't care less.
* There's a difference?
* Mild preference for underhand.
* Strong preference for underhand.
* Underhand rules! Death to overhand!

Ah, see, I didn't actually wonder which one people preferred (which is the poll I usually see), I only wondered how many people actually cared. :) Though it is now clear that I should have had options for "strong preference" versus "mild preference".

These are the internets, there are no mild perferences.

I prefer underhand, although I'm not entirely sure why. But I don't feel that strongly about it, either.

I knew someone who had to do underhand because the cats could unroll the paper if it was overhand.

My response (not listed in poll) is "I have a preference, but practical reasons may cause other people to use the other direction and that's fine too."

(In particular: I use overhand, but expect dog/cat owners to need to use underhand more often.)

That seems like one lame cat if it can't cause trouble with toilet paper over under or still in the plastic wrapper.

Certainly Smiles can get into less trouble if the roll is underhand.

It does have a Proper Rotational Order, that can be trumped by other considerations. (I checked the first option, because I think that will give you closest to the data you're looking for, but I try not to confuse error and sin as in the second clause.)

Given that on patterned tissue, the pattern is always on the side so that it shows to best effect when installed overhand, it seems pretty clear to me that's the manufacturers intent. Additionally, it was pointed out to me by a gentleman that when standing, it is significantly easier to grab overhand.

That said, I think there is a strong aesthetic argument for having the tail end lie neatly against the wall and I have lived with several cat owners who find that in that configuration it provides less temptation to the cats.

So I think that there is a "correct" answer, but that it is not important that it be followed if that's just not the way you roll.

I prefer underhand, but Warren *strongly* prefers overhand, so we go with overhand in our house and I chalk up learning to like overhand just fine to one of the myriad little compromises that make a marriage work.

I am now forever reminded of the short play I directed Waiting with the Hotel Clerk and Old Man: in which the Old Man tells the Hotel Clerk that it's clearly over-the-front because if you look at the little embossed designs on the toilet paper, it's obvious.

HC: But we never get the kind with the little embossed designs!
OM: Well, splurge once, and it'll be obvious!
